Ventolin

What is it?

A B-agonist available in 5ml ampoules containing 1mg of salbutamol as sulphate per ml, for hospital use.

Medical Uses

Premature labour with no complicating features, to try to stop contractions.

Dosage

Diluted solution given by intravenous infusion in first instance, as directed by obstetrician according to manufacturer's literature.

Special Care

Disease of heart circulation, diabetes, maternal thyrotoxicosis. Maternal and foetal heartbeat require careful monitoring.

Avoid Use

Likelihood of miscarriage, placenta praevia, haemorrhage, toxaemia, umbilical cord compression, danger to mother or child if pregnancy continues.

Possible Drug and Food Interactions

β-blockers.

Known Side Effects

Rapid heart beat, anxiety, rise in blood sugar levels, headache, tremor, low blood potassium levels (hypokalaemia), pulmonary oedema (fluid on lungs).
