Viazem XL
What is it?
An antianginal, antihypertensive preparation and class 11 calcium antagonist available as sustained-release capsules in 5 strengths, all containing dilitiazem hydrochloride. Lavender, contain 120mg; blue/ white, contain 180mg; lavender/blue, contain 240mg; lavender/white, contain 300mg; blue, contain 360mg. All are marked with name and strength.
Medical Uses
Angina, mild to moderate high blood pressure.
Dosage
Adults, angina, 240mg once each day, adjusting according to response; high blood pressure, 300mg once each day, adjusting according to response. Elderly patients should start with 120mg.
Special Care
Mild slow heartbeat, prolonged P-R interval (part of ECG), 1st degree AV heart block, reduced function of left ventricle of heart, impaired liver or kidney function.
Avoid Use
Children, pregnancy, breastfeeding, severe slow heartbeat, 2nd or 3rd degree AV heart block, heart failure which is not under control, sick-sinus syndrome.
Possible Drug and Food Interactions
Cimetidine, other heart depressants or antihypertensives, cyclosporin, theophylline, dantrolene infusion, carbamazepine, digoxin.
Known Side Effects
Swollen ankles due to fluid retention, slow heartbeat, flushes, gastrointestinal upset, SA or AV heart block, headache.
