Viraferon
What is it?
A preparation of interferon alfa-2b (rbe) available as a solution in vials (6 mega units per ml) or in multi- dose cartridges (15 mega units and 25 mega units per ml).
Medical Uses
In patients positive for HBVDNA, to treat active, chronic hepatitis B infection; in patients positive for HCV antibodies in whom ALT levels are raised, to treat active, chronic hepatitis C.
Dosage
Adults, for hepatitis B, usually 5 to 10 mega units 3 times each week given by subcutaneous injection, treatment to continue for 4 to 6 months. But if no benefit noted after 3 to 4 months, treatment should be stopped. Treatment of hepatitis C, 3 mega units 3 times each week by subcutaneous injection. Treatment should continue for 3 to 4 months and should be stopped if no benefit has been noted. For maintenance, the same dose should be continued for up to 1 1/zyears. Special Care
Pregnancy, breastfeeding, bone marrow suppression, psoriasis, debilitated, disorders of coagulation. Patients with heart arrhythmias, congestive heart failure, heart attack, eye disorders, advanced cancer should be carefully monitored. Patients should drink plenty of fluids.
Avoid Use
Epilepsy, thyroid disorders, severe heart, liver, kidney or CNS disorders, various forms of hepatitis, psychiatric disorders, transplant patients.
Possible Drug and Food Interactions
Bone marrow suppressants, narcotics, theophylline, sedatives, hypnotics.
Known Side Effects
Anorexia, tiredness, low blood pressure, headaches, fever, muscle pains, nausea, liver disorders. Treatment should be stopped if serious CNS disturbances, pulmonary infiltrates or hypersensitive allergic reactions occur.
