Viraferonpeg

What is it?

A preparation of pegylated interferon (rbe) available as a powder in vials with solvent and in pre-prepared pens, in various strengths containing 50µg, 80µg, 100µg, 120µg, 150µg of peginterferon alfa-2b (rbe) per 0.5ml. Usedfor: chronic hepatitis C; either with tribavirin in patients positive for HCV antibodies or HCV-RNA and raised transaminases. Or, when intolerant of tribavirin or if this cannot be used, as sole treatment in patients positive for HCV antibodies with raised levels of transaminases.

Dosage

Adults, in combination with tribavirin, 1.5µg per kg of body weight by subcutaneous injection once each week, with tribavirin (Rebetol). Sole treatment, 0.5 or 1µg per kg of body weight once each week. In all cases, treatment should continue for 6 months and manufacturer's literature consulted.

Special Care

Bone marrow suppression, psoriasis, debilitated, disorders of coagulation. Patients with heart arrhythmias, congestive heart failure, heart attack, eye disorders should be carefully monitored. Patients should drink plenty of fluids.

Avoid Use

Children, pregnancy, breastfeeding, epilepsy, CNS disorders, autoimmune disorders and hepatitis, serious dysfunction of liver or kidneys, thyroid disorders, severe psychiatric conditions.

Known Side Effects

Anorexia, tiredness, flu-like symptoms, depression, headaches, rigors, fever, muscle pains, nausea, baldness, insomnia. Treatment should be stopped if serious CNS disturbances, pulmonary infiltrates, prolongation of coagulation markers or hypersensitive allergic reactions occur. Any adverse side effects should be reported to the Committee on the Safety of Medicines (CSM).
