Virazole

What is it?

An antiviral preparation available as a powder in vials for nebulisation containing 20mg of tribavirin per ml.

Medical Uses

Bronchiolitis (inflammation of bronchioles - fine tubes-in lungs), respiratory syncitial virus (RSV).

Dosage

Children only, 20mg per ml nebulised or given by aerosol in small particle aerosol generator via oxygen mask, tent or hood, for 12 to 18 hours per day. Treatment should continue for at least 3 days and up to a maximum period of 7 days.

Special Care

Patient and equipment must be closely monitored.

Avoid Use

Pregnancy, women at risk of pregnancy.

Known Side Effects

Bacterial pneumonia, respiratory symptoms that get worst, reticulocytosis, pneumothorax.
