Vivotif
What is it?
A preparation of live attenuated vaccine, available as enteric- coated, white/pink capsules containing at least 2x109 Salmonella typhi organisms of Ty21a strain.
Medical Uses
Immunization against typhoid fever.
Dosage
Adults and children aged over 6 years, 1 capsule with cold drink 1 hour before a meal on days 1, 3 and 5.Annual boost of 3 capsules for those regularly at risk.
Special Care
Pregnancy, breastfeeding.
Avoid Use
Children aged under 6 years, acute fever or gastrointestinal illness, patients with lowered immunity.
Possible Drug and Food Interactions
Antibiotics, cytotoxics, immunosuppressants, sulfonamides, mefloquine.
Known Side Effects
Fever, gastrointestinal upset, flu-like symptoms, headache. In rare cases, allergy, nettle rash.
