Wellvone

What is it?

An antiprotozoal preparation available as a suspension containing 750mg per 5ml.

Medical Uses

Pneumonia caused byP. carinii in patients who cannot tolerate cotrimoxazole - mild to moderate symptoms only.

Dosage

Adults, 5ml twice each day with food for 3 weeks.

Special Care

Elderly, pregnancy, breastfeeding, impaired liver or kidney function, diarrhoea present at start of treatment, patients who have difficulty with taking Wellvone with food. Confirm diagnosis before starting treatment.

Avoid Use

Children.

Possible Drug and Food Interactions

Tetracycline, didanosine, drugs bound to plasma proteins, rifabutin, indinavir, metclopramide, zidovudine, rifampicin.

Known Side Effects

Headache, insomnia, rash, low sodium levels in blood, anaemia, neutropenia (low levels of neutrophils in blood), fever, raised levels of liver enzymes.
