Xanax
What is it?
An antipsychotic and long- acting benzodiazepine available as scored tablets in 2 strengths containing alprazolam. White, oval tablets contain 250µg marked UPJOHN 29 and pink, oval tablets contain 500µg marked UPJOHN 55.
Medical Uses
Short-term treatment of anxiety and anxiety with depression.
Dosage
Adults, 250 to 500µg 3 times each day to a daily maximum of 3mg. Elderly, 250µg 2 or 3 times daily.
Special Care
Pregnancy, breastfeeding, elderly, impaired liver or kidney function, chronic lung insufficiency. Should be withdrawn gradually and not used long-term.
Avoid Use
Chronic psychoses, depressed respiration, acute lung insufficiency, obsessional states and phobias.
Possible Drug and Food Interactions
Depressants of the CNS, alcohol, anticonvulsants.
Known Side Effects
Sleepiness, impaired reactions.
