Zanaflex
What is it?
A central 12-agonist available as white tablets in 2 strengths containing 2mg and 4mg of tizanidine as hydrochloride.
Medical Uses
Spasticity caused by disease or injury to the spinal cord or multiple sclerosis.
Dosage
Adults, 2mg to start then increasing at 3 to 4 day intervals by 2mg increments, according to response, to a daily amount of approximately 24mg in divided doses. The daily maximum is 36mg in divided doses.
Special Care
Pregnancy, breastfeeding, impaired kidney function. Liver tests should be performed for first 4 months and drug withdrawn if enzymes rise to 3 times normal levels.
Avoid Use
Children, elderly, impaired liver function.
Possible Drug and Food Interactions
Oral contraceptives, digoxin, depressants of CNS, diuretics, β-blockers, drugs that prolong QT interval (a part of the ECG), antihypertensives.
Known Side Effects
Gastrointestinal upset, slow heartbeat, drowsiness, low blood pressure, dizziness, insomnia, dry mouth, a rise in liver enzymes, fatigue, hallucinations, acute hepatitis.
