Zelapar
What is it?
A Monoamine oxidase-B inhibitor available as freeze-dried, pale yellow tablets containing 1.25mg of selegiline hydrochloride.
Medical Uses
Additional treatment to levodopa in Parkinson's disease and parkinsonism. Sole treatment for early Parkinson's disease.
Dosage
Adults, 1 tablet placed on tongue and allowed to dissolve before breakfast at first.
Special Care
Severe angina, previous psychosis, stomach ulcer or impaired liver function, high blood pressure which is unstable, heart arrhythmias.
Avoid Use
Children, pregnancy, breastfeeding, phenylketonuria, duodenal or stomach ulcer.
Possible Drug and Food Interactions
Depressants of CNS, non-selective MAOIs, psycho- stimulants, pethidine, opiods, anticholinergics, anticoagulants, SSRIs and antidepressants, agents affecting blood pressure, sympathomimetics, serotonin agonists, digitalis, amantadine.
Known Side Effects
Gastrointestinal upset, muscular cramps, pains in back and chest, sore throat, mouth ulcers, blocked, stuffy nose, muscle disorders, hallucinations, dizziness, insomnia, tremor, tiredness, headache, short- lived rise in liver enzymes, low blood pressure on rising upright. In the event of involuntary movements, dose of levodopa should be reduced.
