Zestril
What is it?
An antihypertensive preparation and ACE inhibitor available as tablets in 4 strengths, all containing lisinopril and marked with heart shape and strength. White, contain 2.5mg; scored, pink, contain 5mg; pink, contain 10mg; pink, contain 20mg. 10 and 20mg strengths are Also, marked with trade mark. Usedfor all grades of essential and renovascular high blood pressure, certain kidney complications of diabetes associated with high blood pressure.
Dosage
Adults, high blood pressure, start with 2.5mg each day, increasing gradually to a maintenance dose of 10 to 20mg once each day, with a daily maximum of 40mg. Cease using diuretic, if possible, 2 to 3 days before treatment for hypertension and resume later, if needed. Kidney complications of diabetes, 2.5mg once each day to start then increase to 10mg or 20mg once each day to achieve desired blood pressure (value depending upon type of diabetes).
Special Care
Breastfeeding, renovascular hypertension, impaired kidney function (monitor before and during treatment), kidney dialysis, narrowed renal arteries causing lessened blood flow, serious congestive heart failure, anaesthesia.
Avoid Use
Children, pregnancy, angioneurotic oedema (widespread swelling due to fluid retention) from past treatment with ACE inhibitor, narrowing of aorta, enlargement of right ventricle.
Possible Drug and Food Interactions
Potassium supplements, potassium-sparing diuretics, lithium, antihypertensives, NSAIDs. antidiabetics.
Known Side Effects
Kidney failure, angioneurotic oedema, low blood pressure, gastrointestinal upset, dizziness, headache, fatigue, cough, nausea, palpitations, rash, weakness.
