Zinamide

What is it?

An anti-tubercular drug and derivative of nicotinic acid available as white, scored tablets containing 500mg of pyrazinamide marked MSD 504.

Medical Uses

Tuberculosis in combinationwith other anti-tuberculous drugs.

Dosage

Adults, 20 to 35mg per kg of body weight each day in divided doses, to a maximum of 3g.

Special Care

Previous gout or diabetes, insufficiency of kidneys; liver function and blood uric acid levels should be frequently checked. Stop drug if liver damage or high blood uric acid levels with gouty arthritis is detected.

Avoid Use

Children, breastfeeding, liver disease, high blood uric acid levels, gouty arthritis.

Known Side Effects

Hepatitis, enlarged liver, anorexia, nausea, fever, enlargement of spleen, malaise, nettlerash, worsening of stomach ulcer, jaundice, joint pains, sideroblastic anaemia, painful urination.
