Zinnat
What is it?
A cephalosporin and antibacterial available as film-coated white tables in 2 strengths containing 125mg and 250mg of cefuroxime as axetil, marked with strength and GLAXO. Also, ZINNAT SUSPENSION, available as a solution containing 125mg of cefuroxime as axetil per 5ml or as granules in sachets for reconstitution.
Medical Uses
Infections of the ear, nose and throat, respiratory or urinary tracts, skin and soft tissues, gonorrhoea.
Dosage
Adults, bronchitis and most other conditions, usually 250mg twice each day after food, 500mg twice daily for severe infections and pneumonia and a lg single dose each day for gonorrhoea. Urinary tract infections, 125mg twice each day but 250mg twice daily for pyelonephritis (a kidney infection). Children aged over 3 months, most infections, 125mg twice each day after food. Middle ear infections, aged 3 months to 2 years, 125mg; aged over 2 years, 250mg. Both twice each day.
Special Care
Pregnancy, breastfeeding, hypersensitivity to penicillin.
Known Side Effects
Pseudomembranous colitis, hypersensitivity reactions, headache, gastrointestinal upset, short-lived candidosis, eosinophilia (increase in number of eosinophils in blood - usually as inflammatory response), Positive Coombs test, increase in liver enzymes. In rare cases, Stevens Johnson syndrome, erythema multiforme (skin disorder), toxic epidermal necrolysis (death of epidermal skin cells), interstitial nephritis (kidney disorder), leucopenia (fall in number white blood cells), thrombocytopenia (decline in number of blood platelets).
