Zomig

What is it?

An NSMD and 5HT, agonist available as film-coated, yellow tablets containing 2.5mg of zolmitriptan, marked Z. Also, ZOMIG RAPIMELT, tablets for dissolving in the mouth containing 2.5mg of zolmitriptan.

Medical Uses

Treatment of acute migraine which may or may not be accompanied by aura.

Dosage

Adults, 1 tablet either swallowed or if rapimelt, dissolved on tongue, taken as soon as possible after symptoms start. Dose may be repeated after 2 hours, if necessary. If response is not sufficient, increase dose to 5mg for subsequent attacks. The maximum dose for recurrent attacks is 15mg in 24 hours.

Special Care

Elderly, pregnancy, breastfeeding, impaired liver function, risk factors for ischaemic heart disease - evaluate risks before using. With Zomig rapimelt, phenylketonuria (product contains aspartame).

Avoid Use

Ischaemic heart disease, high blood pressure which is not under control, Prinzmetal's angina, WolfParkinson-White syndrome, arrhythmias associated with other accessory pathways, vasospasm of coronary arteries, transient ischaemic attack, cerebrovascular event.

Possible Drug and Food Interactions

5HT agonists, fluvoxamine, moclobemide, quinolones, cimetidine, MAO-A inhibitors. If taking ergotamine, allow at least 6 hours before taking this after having Zomig.

Known Side Effects

Sensation of pressure or heaviness in jaw, throat, neck, chest and limbs, weakness, mouth dryness, nausea, muscle pain and weakness, sleepiness, feeling of warmth, dizziness, numbness/tingling/'pins and needles' sensation, short-lived rise in blood pressure. In rare cases, cerebrovascular events, angina, palpitations, rapid heartbeat, allergic reactions, heart attack, vasospasm of coronary arteries.
