Zyban
What is it?
A noradrenaline and dopamine reuptake inhibitor available as sustained-release, film-coated, white tablets containing 150mg of bupropion hydrochloride, marked GX CH7.
Medical Uses
Aid to giving up smoking.
Dosage
Adults, 1 each day for 6 days to start with then 1 tablet twice daily, with at least 8 hours in between doses. Only 1 tablet should be taken at a time and the maximum daily divided dose is 2 tablets. Treatment should be started while patient is still smoking but with set target for stoppinmg within first 2 weeks. Then, continue with tablets for 7 to 9 weeks but only if beneficial effect is observed. Elderly persons, 1 tablet each day.
Special Care
Mild to moderate impairment of liver or kidney function. Diabetes, previous head trauma or alcohol abuse - only use Zyban in exceptional circumstances and with minimal dose of 150mg, due to increased risk of fits. Blood pressure should be monitored before and during treatment - on weekly basis in those with existing high blood pressure or if Also, using nicotine skin patches.
Avoid Use
Children, pregnancy, breastfeeding, tumour of central nervous system, anorexia nervosa, bulimia, severe liver cirrhosis, bipolar disorder, abrupt withdrawal of alcohol or benzodiazepines.
Known Side Effects
Gastrointestinal upset, allergic reactions, alteration in sense of taste, insomnia, effects on skin, CNS disturbances, fever, headaches, dry mouth, fits, high blood pressure (sometimes severe). Any adverse side effects should be reported to the Committee on the safety of Medicines (CSM).
