Zyloric

What is it?

An inhibitor of xanthine oxidase which forms uric acid, available as white tablets in 2 strengths contain ing 100mg of allopurinol, coded U4A and 300mg of allopurinol, marked ZYLORIC 300 and C9B.

Medical Uses

To reduce urate/uric acid formation where deposition is likely, kidney stones when high levels of uric acid is present in urine.

Dosage

Adults, mild cases, start with 100 to 200mg each day; moderate, 300 to 600mg each day; severe, 700 to 900mg each day. Children aged under 15 years, 10 to 20mg per kg of body weight each day to a daily maximum dose of 400mg.

Special Care

Elderly, pregnancy, liver or kidney disease, weak heart, high blood pressure. Anti-inflammatory drug to be given for 1 month at start of treatment. Maintain fluid intake.

Avoid Use

Acute gout.

Possible Drug and Food Interactions

Anticoagulants, cyclosporin, salicylates, vidarabine, azathioprine, theophylline, cyclophosphamide, mercaptopurine, phenytoin, ampicillin, chlorpropamide, amoxycillin, other cytotoxics.

Known Side Effects

Nausea, acute gout, allergic reactions, anaphylaxis. Withdraw if there are skin reactions.
