Recipe (Rx) Pharmacy Symbol

The Rx symbol, which traditionally has been part of a prescription, has been adopted as a symbol of pharmacy, especially in North America.

Although universally accepted as an abbreviation of the latin term 'recipe' (meaning 'take thou'), it has also been suggested that the symbol is the astronomical sign of the planet Jupiter. It was thought that the symbol might have been placed upon formula containing drugs made for administration to the body, so that the harmful properties of these drugs might be removed under the influence of the lucky planet.
