Over the past ten years, the number of Internet pharmacies has risen greatly; some customers consider this to be more private and convenient method rather than travelling to a community pharmacy. Online pharmacies may also be recommended to housebound patients by their doctors.

While the majority of online pharmacies sell prescription drugs and require a valid prescription; however, there are some Internet pharmacies that sell prescription drugs without requiring a prescription. This practice is potentially dangerous, as only doctors can reliably assess risk/benefit ratios, contraindications, and an individual's overall suitability for use of a medication.
